Her face clouded over for a second. Damnit, that hadn’t been the right choice of words at all.

“Like I said in Phoenix,” she said with cool detachment, pushing away from the bar. She grabbed a bar cloth and started polishing the countertop, her gaze deliberately avoiding his now. “I don’t have any experience with a strictly friends with benefits deal, but you can’t have any expectations of getting more physical.”

“Hey, I was going to say relationship, but I thought that might scare you. You know I’m not that kind of guy.”

She nodded and glanced to the door like she wanted a flood of customers to come in and save her from talking to the guy whose tongue had been down her throat apparently one too many times.

Fine, he could take a hint.

But he wasn’t going to storm off, and he wasn’t going to make a scene. He pulled out his phone, picked up his sandwich and went back to being the old Chase. Just what she wanted. Or what she was trying to pretend she wanted.

He couldn’t forget how hot she’d been in his arms. How close they’d come to getting naked—multiple times—over the weekend. He’d thought he’d been doing the right thing, going slow and stoking the fires between them.

Maybe they should’ve just had a weekend fling and been done with it.

“Chase?” He jerked his head up. His sandwich was long gone, and Mari tentatively pointed to his basket. “Can I take that?”

He nodded, stood, and pulled some cash out of his wallet. “I’m going fishing with my dad for the weekend,” he muttered without looking up at her. “Want to have dinner some time next week?”

She didn’t answer. He had two choices—assume her silence was a polite no, and walk away, or take advantage of what he knew was on his side and make her burn a little.

He hadn’t survived nine years in the NHL without learning the value of sometimes playing dirty. He looked up, caught her gaze, and lowered his voice. “Tell you what. You don’t need to decide now. Just keep thinking about how good it feels when you’re riding my lap and you can feel exactly what you do to me.”

Two hot pink circles popped onto her cheeks. “That’s not fair,” she whispered.

“Sorry, sweetheart. I have a feeling I wouldn’t know how to play fair when it comes to hanging on to you.” Her pretty little nose flared at that, and he stepped back. “Let me know what night works for you.”

She pressed her lips together and took a deep breath, then smiled slowly like she knew something he didn’t. Not a big stretch on the ol’ imagination. “Well, the joke’s on you. I’m actually out of town for most of next week.”

“Why?” Like he had any right to ask. But he had, so he left it there between them.

She slowly shook her head. “That’s for me to know and for you to stew on for a bit.” Her eyes softened. “And when I get back, maybe we can go for a drive.
